World Pool 9-Ball: Efren 'Bata' Reyes shoots for 3rd world crown

Filipino pool veteran and wizard Efren "Bata" Reyes will attempt to become the first Filipino to win 3 world billiard titles when he competes in the 2011 World 9-Ball Championship in Doha, Qatar on Saturday.

Reyes, one of the greatest billiard players of all time, battles Mark Gray of Great Britain in Group 1.

Reyes was the 1999 World 9-Ball champion and the 2004 World 8-Ball king.

If he wins this year's edition of the World 9-Ball tourney, he will become the first Filipino to win 3 titles.

Fellow Filipino cue master and 2010 World 8-Ball titlist Dennis "Robocop" Orcollo will square off with Andrew Kong of Hongkong also in Group 1.

Reigning 9-Ball champion Francisco "Django" Bustamante will kicks off his title-retention bid against countryman Caneda Villamor in Group 4.

Carlo "Cool" Biado will meet Petri Makkonen of Finland in Group 4 while Antonio "GaGa" Gabica will face Chris Melling of Great Britain in Group 2.

A total of 128 players coming from 44 countries will participate in the $250,000 total pot prize tournament. The champion will get the $36,000 top purse.

NBA stars vs Smart-Gilas Pilipinas

Smart-Gilas Pilipinas plans to skip its Europe training and instead play a series of exhibition games with an NBA selection in preparation for the FIBA Asia Championship in Wuhan, China in September.

"We'll probably play an NBA selection but I don't know the composition of the team,'' said Gilas coach Rajko Toroman in a statement.

Team officials are reportedly coordinating with former NBA All-Star Chris Webber in an effort to bring in NBA MVP Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, scoring champion Kevin Durant of Oklahoma Thunder and rookie of the year Blake Griffin of the LA Clippers, among others.

The Nationals are supposed to train in Lisbon, Portugal and Istanbul, Turkey against European teams before going to the William Jones Cup in Taipei and the Asian championships in China.

Injuries
Toroman said injuries to some of the Nationals made them rethink their itinerary going to the FIBA Asia Championship, the qualifying meet to the 2012 London Olympics.

Marcio Lassiter was forced to return to Manila at the height of the Southeast Asian Basketball Association (SEABA) tournament after experiencing back problems.

The 6’2” shooting guard collapsed during the team's practice in Jakarta on Wednesday.

“Marcio is one of our main players. But we have to win the [SEABA] championship even without him,'' said Toroman.

The Nationals have posted 2 straight wins over Malasya and host country Indonesia.

Jackass star Ryan Dunn died from a violent car crash

Jackass daredevil Ryan Dunn and his passenger died from the impact of the violent car crash they were involved in and the resulting fire, according to a coroner's report.

The Chester County coroner listed blunt force trauma and thermal trauma as the official causes of death for both men. Toxicology results will take four to six weeks to complete, coroner's office spokeswoman Patty Emmons said.

Dunn was known for making viewers cringe and snicker through vulgar stunts with his cohorts in the multimillion-dollar Jackass TV and movie franchise.

Dunn, 34, and passenger Zachary Hartwell died early Monday, shortly after leaving Barnaby's, a pub in West Chester. Dunn had tweeted a photo of the pair and a third man drinking just hours before the crash, but the photo has since been taken down.

The manager of Barnaby's, Jim O'Brien, told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Dunn was drinking with several friends at the bar but didn't appear drunk.

A preliminary examination of the crash site suggested Dunn's Porsche may have been travelling more than 100 mph (160kph) in the 55 mph zone when it jumped a guardrail, flew into a wooded ravine, struck a tree and burst into flames.

Team Pilipinas SMART Gilas faces Mahram today

Smart Gilas surged back from 15 points down through Marcus Douthit’s sustained firepower then leaned on clutch shooting down the stretch to edge Syria’s Al-Jala’a, 85-80, and assure the country of its best finish in 15 years in the FIBA Champions Cup before flag-waving Friday crowd at the Philsports Arena.

The Nationals continued to play with poise and heart so evident in their last two games, turning back the Syrians’ last-ditch rally with pressure-laden offensives and incisive passing to notch the win and a seat in the semifinal round of the 22nd staging of the tournament.

Douthit fired 12 of 26 points in the last quarter in a one-on-one duel with former Los Angeles Laker Samaki Walker as the Nationals went on to post their best finish in the Champions Cup since 1996 when Hapee Toothpaste claimed the feat.
